I remember in the church I went to growing up, the pastor would give a benediction every week that went like this:

"May the Lord bless you and keep you,
May he make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you,
May he lift up his countenance upon you,
And fill you with the peace that passes all human understanding."

This is a nice sentiment, although it was completely incomprehensible to me at age 8. I was sure then that I never wanted to be face-to-face with God. I had enough fear issues with my third grade teacher, for Pete's sake. Also, why in the world would I want to have any experience that lay outside human understanding? Math was maddening enough. Thanks, pastor, but no thanks.

Now, as an adult, I live in a world where all peace seems to be outside human understanding. Where family animosity is considered to be entertaining TV fare. Where violence is a way of life for many of the world's disenfranchised. I guess now would be a good time for God to get all shiny and peaceful with our sad, angry world.

But, I also realize that I need to cultivate a compassionate heart and sow the seeds of peace in my immediate environment before I can even begin to hope for the world to change. I know there are a lot of people who believe like I do. That's why I designed this piece. It bestows a sense of peace upon the wearer and fills her surroundings with calm and tranquility.
