No Need for Haste

I have a teacher, a Mexican Shaman named John, who gives me the same answer whenever I ask the question, "How long will this take?" His answer is always, "It takes as long as it takes."

Shamans are pretty smart people. They study the natural world, then apply those lessons to their lives and their teachings. As John observes, the natural world operates in gentle cycles. The seasons, the planting and harvesting of fruits of the land, the conception, birth and growth of the young are all cycles that, simple put, "Take as long as they take."

Science has gone a long way in recent years to try to alter those cycles, developing fruit that ripens early and finding a multitude of faster ways to do things. If you've ever tasted "fast fruit" you would note that it is okay, but nothing close to the flavor of one of the old heritage trees growing out ther in Great-Granpa's orchard.

Quick is all well and good, but there are times in life when things are just sweeter, in particular when we allow nature to express, well, naturally. We need not fall prey to the hurry up mentality prevalent in the media. Sometimes our greatest benefit lies in patience.
