Transmutation

Ram Dass tells a story about the days he spent with his Indian guru in India during the 1960's that has always fascinated me.

Ram Dass was one day sitting at the feet of his guru when the topic of LSD came up. Now, one of Ram Dass' best friends at the time was Timothy Leary, a great advocate of ingesting lots of acid in order to shift personal perspective. Not surprisingly, Ram Dass had a pocketful of the stuff. His guru asked him for it, and Dass obediently handed it over, thinking his guru would just throw it away. Instead, the old guru closely examined the potentially toxic dose of LSD in his hand, which was more than enough to keep a dozen people "tripping" for days. The guru looked up and smiled, and before anyone could do anything, he popped the whole mess into his mouth and swallowed it.

Alarmed, Ram Dass encouraged his guru to throw it up or get a doctor, but his guru calmed him and they sat and spoke quietly for hours.

After a while it became evident that the LSD had no effect on the guru whatsoever. Ram Dass asked him how this could be? The guru explained that compared to the power of God, all else was as nothing. He had merely employed this power to transmute the drug.

"Now stop poisoning yourself and be in touch with God. That is enough!"
