Gift of Gab The legend of the Blarney Stone is one of those tales that, as a worker of stone, has always fascinated me. It is said that Cormac Macdermot faced the fate of having his family lands seized by Queen Elizabeth I. His only hope was to effectively plead his case before the Queen and make her change her mind. The problem was that he was an inveterate stutterer. The prospect of retaining his land was not good. One day he chanced upon an old wise woman (of course) who told him that Blarney Castle had been built with one stone put into place by a man who predicted no one would be able to touch it again. She further told him that if he could kiss that stone, he would be blessed with the gift of eloquence. Cormac succeeded in finding and kissing the stone. He then was able to go and address the Queen "with speech so soft and words so fair that as long as he lived, he never had to renounce his right to his land." These days people from all over the world travel to Blarney Castle , get down on their backs on the grimy paving stones of the castle courtyard, draw themselves under the wall, and place their lips on the equally grimy Blarney Stone, that they might also receive the gift of gab. I don't know about you, but that sounds kind of yucky to me. With a little thought, I figured I could do better than that. This piece was designed to bestow the wearer with the "gift of gab". It also allows them to traverse the chaos normally present in daily conversation and succeed in winning whatever debate they may engage in. And all that without leaving home. |
